Number of days of prep: 5 days TOEFL Prep Material Used: Gave GRE on Nov 6, 2016 and end of that day, I purchased 'Magoosh TOEFL - Premium - 1 week plan' just 6 days before my TOEFL exam. Other than Magoosh TOEFL premium material, I also skimmed through 'Official TOEFL guide', 'Introducing Magoosh’s Guide to the TOEFL iBT' and 'Magoosh's TOEFL Writing Template'. Quick Background w.r.to my exposure to English Language: I am a non-native English speaker. But, my classes in school and undergrad courses were all taught in english. I also have 4.5 years of work experience in software industry where in I get to collaborate - in English - minimum once a week, with colleagues from U.S, U.K and New Zealand. Magoosh TOEFL Premium Material - General: Even when I only had 5 days for TOEFL prep, instead of following Magoosh's 1 Week plan, I followed Magoosh's http://magoosh.com/toefl/two-week-toefl-study-plan/. Magoosh videos on 'Format of the TOEFL' and 'Detailed information on each section' helped me understand the TOEFL exam better and hence I skipped the Mock Tests in the 2 week study plan which provided me time to cover most of the TOEFL Premium material (videos and practice questions) which was important for me. Having said that, I am not suggesting skipping 'Mock Tests' is okay. For some, it will be really important to give 'TOEFL Mock Test' at the start of their prep for them to understand their strong and weak areas for effective usage of their limited prep time. Magoosh TOEFL Premium Material - Reading: I watched initial set of videos but mostly concentrated on practicing reading questions. 'Practice Reading' section trains you nicely with the format of the questions that you will see on the exam day. 20 minutes per reading task is ideal and should move on to the next reading task if that time-limit is crossed. But, if you practice enough to finish a single reading task comprising of 14 questions in 15 or less minutes, you should be able to tackle more difficult reading sections on exam day within time. There is also one more important tip to remember. Even when I aced through the 'reading tasks' in Magoosh practice question set, and completed them within 18 minutes/task, I was still running out of time on test day and that affected my score (24/30). When I started reading, the test takers on my left and right were doing their listening section (headphone volume was loud enough for me to hear clearly their listening sections) and a few near-by test takers were already into their speaking section. Magoosh warned me about this and suggested preparing for TOEFL with external noise preferably in english. Example: Turn on TV and set some English channel while you prepare for TOEFL. Magoosh TOEFL Premium Material - Listening: Great material and practice questions. Prepared me best for the actual listening section. Magoosh TOEFL Premium Material - Speaking: Their material covers all subsections of the TOEFL speaking section, their format with sample tasks, sample answers and more importantly sample structure for you try the speaking tasks. You will have limited time to prepare and speak. Some tasks give you 15 seconds for prep and 45 seconds to speak; some 20-30 seconds to prep and 60 seconds to speak. Their material will guide you to spend those precious minute(s) wisely to get great scores. Magoosh TOEFL Premium Material - Writing: Again, similar to speaking, has enough detail on format, sample questions, sample answers, awesome explanations and sample structure. I never thought I will be able to prepare for TOEFL writing section so quick. |
